Project in Focus: Cambridge North Station
Cambridge North Station opened on 21st May 2017 and Merson are delighted to have been a part of this successful project for Network Rail, part of their current Railway Upgrade Plan.
Cambridge North Station is located in Chesterton, close to Cambridge Science Park and Cambridge Business Park. It is managed by Greater Anglia and also accommodates Great Northern services, connecting Cambridge, Norwich and Ely with London’s Liverpool Street and Kings Cross Stations. With approximately 3000 passengers passing through the station each day, Cambridge North successfully eases congestion at the main Cambridge Station.
Merson were contracted by VolkerFitzpatrick to design, manufacture and install the signage required for the new station, which comprised three platforms, three lifts, a ticket office, overbridge and a 450-space car park.
The suspended and wall-mounted station wayfinding signage was manufactured from Vitreous Enamel, as per Greater Anglia’s design specifications. The platform signage was fabricated from aluminium and mounted onto galvanised steel posts, chemically fixed into the platforms. The Car Park signage was manufactured from traffic-grade powder-coated aluminium panels.
The distinctive perforated aluminium cladding, designed by a Cambridge University professor, was complemented by built-up fabricated aluminium lettering, installed onto a steel structure on the station roof. The construction design was developed from the original design intent by Merson’s CAD team and fabricated in East Kilbride. All of Merson’s installation crews are harness-trained and IPAF qualified, therefore we were able to complete the installation using in-house crews and hired-in plant.
All of the signage types and materials used for Cambridge North Station are those that Merson is accustomed to designing and working with, therefore it was overall a straightforward project. Installation was completed over a two-week period on day shifts, in time for the first trains’ arrival.
Having completed numerous signage projects for Greater Anglia in recent years, Merson’s Infrastructure Division were delighted to deliver the signage required for this contemporary station, which will be appreciated by passengers for years to come.
